This post is for those who have asked for pictures from Lydia’s graduation. It will be mostly pictures, but I’ll tell you a little about what we did. “We” means Ted, Beth, and Serena; Ben Allen and Emily; and Sarah, Rainey, and William. We all drove up together in 3 vehicles. I had the 2 back seats out in my van so I could 1) bring 2 rented wheelchairs for Ted’s parents’ use, and 2) have room for all Lydia’s stuff to vacate her apartment and bring her back home. Ohio State University NROTC 45th annual Color Parade
So Lydia says, “The ROTC Color Parade in the OSU stadium is no big deal.” (We had gotten an invitation as her parents.) “Maybe you should come next year when I have been in the NROTC program for awhile…” This was about a week before May 15th, the day of the parade. By Tues. we heard from somewhere that she might be getting a few awards; by Thur. Lydia called again, sort of wistfully, and announced that she would be getting more than two awards, and could we think about coming??
Bragging Alert! You might have guessed it was coming; in a mostly vain effort at discretion, the major part of our wanton bragging is below the fold… you’ve been warned!!
Fortunately, we did go, it was a beautiful day, and we sat at the end of the HUGE stadium, where we watched what seemed like fifty ROTC students raise and lower a 50 lb, enormous American flag. Continue reading “Ohio State University NROTC 45th annual Color Parade”
Catholic Rebellion
We are not Catholics. Although I have been to Roman Catholic services, I (and my family) find their fundamental doctrines flawed and in some ways containing serious error. Nevertheless, on May 17th, we will stand with, and pray for, this Catholic rebellion.
The video is short, to the point and very well done. I urge you to watch it. It lays out Continue reading “Catholic Rebellion”
Happy New Year (Guo Nian Hao)
Happy New Year friends and family!
No, I have not mistaken the time, for the new year has just come around and up here there is much celebration. I am talking of course of the Chinese lunar new year which was on Thursday, Feb 7. The Asian community at OSU had many parties and it felt a lot like international new year, only all in Chinese ;)> This year is the year of the rat Continue reading “Happy New Year (Guo Nian Hao)”
Sarah’s Graduation
Ted and I, Lydia, Serena, and Emily (Nana) traveled to Chattanooga on Thursday, May 3 to spend some time with Sarah and attend her graduation from Covenant College. The trip down was overcast and drizzly, but the weather cleared some- what by the time we got there. Sarah had choral rehearsals in the afternoon and evening, so the rest of us went to the Tennessee Aquarium. There was definitely more than we could see in 2 hours (2 buildings worth), but we skimmed through it all. Our favorites were the seahorses, the snowy egret that posed for a picture 3 feet away, the butterfly garden, the octopus, and the tank of penguins. Here’s the egret.
Sarah met us for supper between rehearsals. We went to Food Works, which was a very nice restaurant with somewhat unusual selections. We also saw Sarah later Thursday night, when she came by our cottage with her boyfriend, Dani.
Friday, after breakfasting at Sarah’s apartment while trying not to wake up her sleeping roommates, we drove half-way down Lookout Mountain to a park trail that leads to a waterfall. The girls had been there before, and wanted us all to see it. Sarah said the trail was only 1/4 mile long. We were concerned about whether or not Emily would be able to make it. As it turned out, it was more like 1/2 mile, or felt like it, with lots of rocks to negotiate near the falls. Emily did manage to make it with several rests, and lots of assistance over the rough parts. To complicate matters, she was recovering from cataract surgery in one eye. Check out her cool shades in one of the following pictures.

After lunch back at Sarah’s apartment, we left Continue reading “Sarah’s Graduation”
